Rehabilitation Technology
Surgery also known as Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery is known to be used to treat brain disorders such as brain tumors and arteriovenous malformations. This intervention is a form of non-invasive treatment of patients who did not undergo traditional surgery to the brain. This technology was originally developed by the Swedish neurosurgeon Lars Leskell in 1967 at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
The device range contains about 201 sources of cobalt-60 of about 30 Curie, in a heavily shielded assembly in a circle. The device sends radiation through a target within the brain of the patient. The victims should have a specialized helmet (which is operationally defined in the brain) so that the brain tumor remains stationary wear at the direction of the light rays. There is almost no impact on the environment of the tissue and the majority of patients return home within an hour of operation.
After attaching the frame, the patient receives a CT scan, MRI, angiography, or scan. The captured data is then transferred to the state-of-art computer programming to adjust so that the team specifically to treatment with the radiation dose to match the volume of the lesion. After completion of treatment the patient on the couch and a knife collimator helmet is placed placed on the patient’s head. Then the patient with 201 cobalt-60 source is housed in the Gamma Knife treatment. About 202 doses of gamma radiation coming together on the target area, sufficient to destroy the malignant and benign tumors of the brain!
Gamma rays are used to treat a portion of the brain, and therefore this technique is very useful for the orientation of the base or lower part of the brain that can not be achieved with conventional open surgery! In addition, the knife combines data from three-dimensional imaging of the computer and it is very well defined, low-risk alternative and cost-effectiveness. This technology is fairly inexpensive compared to the long hospital stay, antibiotic therapy and rehabilitation.
The word “Gamma Knife” is an illusion, because it has no blade and makes no incision, and is a superior / tools specifically for the treatment of brain tumors. To date, more than 150,000 patients worldwide are treated and no mortality was reported again! Although this technology is in use for over three decades, but exploded in the last five years. Leksell the number of centers increased by nearly 175 percent in the United States and the number of patients cared for by about 250 percent.
So one can see that the Gamma Knife technology is very effective and has saved thousands of lives around the world. Whether technologies like this to grow further, then we will soon have a world free from disease!
